Rudy Giuliani leading in WaPo/ABC poll

In the latest WaPo/ABC poll, Rudy Giuliani has widened his lead over the closest Republican candidate for President. An excerpt:

  • 63% of Republicans say that Mayor Giuliani "Is the strongest leader"
  • 65% say he "Is the most inspiring"
  • 51% say he "Best understands the problems of people like you"
  • And interestingly, 55% of Republicans say that Rudy Giuliani "Has the best chance of getting elected in November of 2008."

Liberals say the DARNDEST Things

Those funny little liberals. Just when you think you've heard it all, some crazy moonbat comes up with yet another wacky little saying. The latest?

So they're calling for a military junta to take over the country, and calling Pres. Bush a prostitute. Aren't liberals fun?

Democratic Candidates Want to Pull Out Now (Surprise!)

In a move that will surprise, well, no one, the (so-far) 8 Presidential candidates all want us out of Iraq, either by a phased redeployment (to Okinawa?) or an immediate withdrawal. The current crop of 9 Republican candidates are pretty well split on "ceding responsibility to Iraq's", phased redeployment, or maintaining troop levels. The NY Times gives us a good roundup of each candidates position. (Finally, something useful from the Grey Lady)

Sen. Leiberman stands strong on Iraq war

Sean Hannity had Sen. Joe Leiberman of Connecticut on his afternoon radio show today. Unfortunately I don't have any audio of it (I was driving home from work at the time), but Sen. Leiberman had some interesting things to say about the war in Iraq, support for the troops, and his thoughts on entering the war. Among them:
  • The U.S. was not the only country which believed that Saddam Hussein had WMD's, every other country was told the same thing by their intelligence agencies.
  • WMD's were not the only reason given for invading Iraq: Hussein was a dictator, he committed atrocities against his own people, he invaded soveriegn countries, etc.
  • Whether you agree with the invasion or not, the only responsible course is to continue the support for the war. The 'thousand cuts' that Rep. Murtha is attempting, the non-binding resolutions, the threat of de-funding the war all send the message to the troops that we're not supporting them as fully as we should.
  • He wouldn't be against voting for (and supporting) a Republican candidate for president in '08.

The above are not accurate quotes, but they are essentially his statements. He's said all of these things before, but it's nice to hear that not all the Democrats are against the war. He specifically mentioned famous Democrats in the past, like Scoop Jackson, FDR, JFK, etc.

The one thing that Sean did not ask him was whether he would consider switching parties; Sean spent too much time (in my opinion) asking the Senator to support a candidate now. Interesting interview, anyway.

Too Western!

This, courtesy of Michelle.

A father killed his wife and four daughters in their sleep because he could not bear them adopting a more westernised lifestyle, an inquest heard yesterday.

Mohammed Riaz, 49, found it abhorrent that his eldest daughter wanted to be a fashion designer, and that she and her sisters were likely to reject the Muslim tradition of arranged marriages.

On Hallowe'en last year he sprayed petrol throughout their terraced home in Accrington, Lancs, and set it alight.

Words just don't describe how sickening this is. To think that this idiot thought that killing his family was justified. Yet another example of the disgusting hold the "Religion of Peace" has on it's followers.

How the HELL did he do this?

Ignore the Japanese, but could someone please explain to me how this guy stuck his hand THROUGH the fish tank?

Shamelessly stolen from GOC.

Just In Case

In case you weren't sure about how best to support the troops... words of wisdom from one who was there.

Congressman Murtha, are you listening?

Something To Look Forward To

To avert soaring cases of close proximity and vice here, the Terengganu Government has initiated an ingenious plan where “Mat Skoding” or spies will be recruited to tip-off the state religious department of immoral activities.
So says
Malaysia's State Islam Hadhari and Welfare Committee chairman Datuk Rosol Wahid in thestar.com, an on-line newspaper from Malaysia. In order to halt the spread of unmarried sex, spies recruited by the Islamic government would be on the lookout for unmarried couples behaving suspiciously.

Yes, by all means, let Sharia law be implemented here. Then you too can earn extra money by tattling on your neighbor.

Poor Little Amanda

Poor little Amanda... fired, er, I mean resigned from John Edwards campaign, is now whining about her site getting hit by 'spammers'. She posted a little diatribe on her website complaining about Catholics yelling at her. She happened to bring up the parable from the New Testament where Jesus is asked to stone an adulteress, and he says that "He who is without sin cast the first stone." I guess because of that a Christian isn't allowed to complain about somebody else. Here's part of her words of wisdom.

Granted, I don't think criticizing the church for policies that hurt families and even get people killed is a "sin", but my letter writers do. But I thought I'd bring up this story for two reasons. One, I've always been impressed by the subtext of the story. I suspect, strongly, that this story is part of the reason that Christianity was so attractive to women in its early days, because this sort of random misogynist scapegoating is all too real in a patriarchy, and this story must have touched a lot of women at the time, who would be impressed with Jesus' unwillingness to play into such misogyny. In fact, from everything I understand, much of the history of Christian misogyny is one 2,000 year long backlash against early female power in the church.

Oh yeah... the link above that she references? It's referring to Iran.

Update: After complaints, I decided to remove the name-calling, it doesn't accomplish anything. I still feel my original point is valid.

A Sign of Things to Come

The furor over the Marcotte/McEwan blogging history is not dying down, and my guess is that it'll become more of an issue in the future. In fact, I'd say that by taking the actions he has, John Edwards is attempting to position himself as the Ned Lamont of the 2008 presidential race. I would bet he looked at the nutroot support given to Lamont with drool running down his chin, and saw his continued support of Marcotte/McEwan as the lynchpin in securing his own support.

Interesting times indeed.

John Edwards speaks

Addressing the recent controversy regarding Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan, John Edwards just issued a statement that basically says he doesn't want their type of vitriole associated with his campaign. He also said, however, that he believes "in giving everyone a fair shake". So apparently he gave them a good talking to, but will continue to keep them on his staff. This is probably the most politically expedient solution; try to appease the more moderate lefts, but keep the nutroots off his back by not getting rid of Marcotte and McEwan.

How Bizarre!

Reading a story on Aljazeera.com, I came across this:

Uh, is that really a Mohammed-bomb I see?

Snicker. So what happened? Aljazeera apparently linked a pic back to Snapped Shot, so they changed their pic to show a Mohammad-bomb figure... I wonder how long that'll be up? And how much outrage it'll generate? :-)
